What Is Allergic Rhinitis?

Allergic rhinitis is the most common condition in the modern world that you may not have ever heard of. Rhinitis refers to the inflammation (-itis) of the nose (in Greek, rhinos, like the animal with the horn on its nose), and allergic rhinitis is a form of nasal inflammation and irritation caused by over-activity of the immune system.

Seasonal Allergic Rhinitis

The most common form of allergic rhinitis is seasonal allergic rhinitis. As its name suggests, seasonal allergic rhinitis occurs about the same time every year, coinciding with a particular plant's reproductive cycle. When that plant's pollen fills the air, susceptible individuals get allergy symptoms.

Over-Active Immune System

The reason something as simple as pollen can cause allergic rhinitis is that your immune system misidentifies it as a foreign invader. The very first time you were exposed to this particular allergy trigger, your immune system "remembered" it as if it were a bacterium or a virus.

The next time a few tiny particles of this particle land in your nose, your immune system acts as if you had an infection. It tells mast cells in the lining of your nose to explode tiny "grenades" of histamine, the body chemical you take antihistamines to control. Histamine literally dissolves tissues around the allergen, and the clear fluid in those tissues runs into your mucus, carrying the allergen with it.

Sometimes an allergen does not cause any symptoms at all when it is in your nose. It is only activated after it gets into the throat and its outer coat is dissolved by the same digestive enzymes that digest food. Then it can cause allergies in your throat and allergy-induced asthma.

But What About Bee Pollen for Allergies? Why Would That Work?

The nature of allergic rhinitis is that nobody is allergic to everything—even if it seems that way. Your immune system might "remember" up to about 200 different substances as infectious invaders, but there will always be far more substances that don't cause allergies than do.

That's why many people benefit, ironically, from taking capsules of "bee pollen" for their allergies. Bee pollen is the pollen bees collect on their travels outside the hive. Captured and processed during the harvesting of honey, bee pollen contains tremendous concentrations of antioxidants that act as antihistamines, stopping allergic reactions.

What Else Can You Do to Stop Allergic Rhinitis?

Although it is usually helpful, relatively few people take bee pollen for allergies. A lot more take various kinds of antihistamines.

The problem with antihistamines is that many of the more affordable brands cause drowsiness. They interfere with job performance, they take away your energy for enjoying your life, and they set you up for accidents.

It's a lot better to keep allergens out of your upper respiratory tract in the first place. And the most efficient and affordable way to do that is with a home air purifying unit with HEPA filtration.

Allergic Rhinitis Symptoms

Allergic rhinitis is a condition most of us know better as hay fever, and we all know the symptoms of hay fever. But some of the symptoms of allergic rhinitis/hay fever may not be exactly what you expect

Sneezing, Wheezing, Itchy Nose, Runny Nose and More

Allergic rhinitis is aggravating, but it's not a serious condition in and by itself. The problem comes with the complications of this illness most of us call hay fever. Just a few of the common complications of allergy-induced nasal inflammation include:

  • Ear infections
  • Sinusitis
  • Asthma
  • Chronic throat infections
  • Tonsillitis

And that doesn't even include the dangers of medication for allergic rhinitis. People who have this condition usually take antihistamines. They either shell out $200 or so for a doctor's visit (or have insurance that covers this) and another $100 or so for a medication that doesn't cause drowsiness, or they take a product like Benadryl and stay sleepy all the time.

Benadryl usually does stop allergy symptoms. It prevents allergic rhinitis from progressing to other, more serious diseases in many cases. But what good does it do for you to get over your sneezing only to spend three months in the hospital when you crash your car because you are too sleepy to drive?

Symptoms All Over Your Body

Some of the "comorbidities," or related conditions, that are triggered by allergic rhinitis are not even in your respiratory system. The same kinds of immune over-activity that cause an allergic reaction to foreign particles that you breathe into your nose can also cause immune over-activity in your skin. This condition is known as atopic dermatitis, more commonly called eczema.

That's right, hay fever can trigger eczema. This connection is particularly acute in small children. Kids who get nasal allergies tend to get tonsillitis and sore throats and ear infections, and then to compound their suffering, they get eczema, too.

Healing All Over Your Body, too

The good news about these connections is that anything you do to control your "allergy triggers" for allergic rhinitis/hay fever will also help you control the sore throats, sinusitis, tonsillitis, ear infections, and eczema, too.

What do you need to do to avoid your allergy triggers? Well, it helps just not to be around things that cause hay fever. If you are allergic to cats, maybe you don't want your cat sleeping on your bed. You want your cat sleeping its own bed.

Or if you are allergic to pollen, just shut the window. When pollen doesn't come into your house, it doesn't cause you any allergies.

But the best way to stop the allergic rhinitis that leads to so many other nasty health conditions it to purify the air your breathe in every room in your house. Usually this is done with a HEPA filter air filtration device. The right HEPA filter air filtration device not only will help you keep your home clean with less muss and fuss, it will greatly reduce your exposure to allergy-invoking substances and slow down the progression of allergic rhinitis to many other serious health complaints.

Another way is to use an ultrasonic aromatherapy diffuser. Aromatherapy diffuser with essential oils can kill bacteria and clean the air.
