How Allergic Rhinitis Becomes Viral Rhinitis and What You Can Do to Stop It
Allergic rhinitis is the condition of nasal inflammation most of us know better as hay fever. It happens the same time every year and we might get over it with the help of antihistamines (although this article will mention an even better method a little later).
Viral rhinitis is the kind of nasal inflammation that most of us have when get a cold or the flu. Antihistamines don't help very much, and a simple infection of the upper respiratory tract can lead to many kinds of complications as other infections set in, including ear infections, throat infections, sinusitis, and sometimes even pneumonia.
The reason allergic rhinitis leads to viral rhinitis and other kinds of infections is that it is easy for viruses to take hold when the linings of the nostrils are already damaged. Fortunately, there are some things you can do keep this from happening. Here are just a few.
For most people, the most practical way to prevent the allergic rhinitis that sets you up for viral rhinitis is simply to get allergy causing pollen, dust, and dander out of the air. And the most efficient way to do this is with small HEPA filters strategically placed around the house. The more your filter your air, the less you have to deal with allergies, colds, and flu.

- Consider using a neti pot. Pouring water in one nostril and letting it drain out the other removes many of the irritants and viruses that set you up for viral infections.
- Treat gluten allergy symptoms (wheat allergy symptoms). Gluten is the protein in wheat flour that makes it stretchable. Some people have an immune reaction to gluten that makes the entire immune system hypervigilant, on high alert all the time. Sometimes avoiding wheat products is just what you need to shift the balance of your immune system so allergic rhinitis, and the viral rhinitis that can follow it, are much less common.
- Don't use a new hair dye without doing a test patch first. If you dump a lot of dye on your hair or beard, and you happen to be allergic to one of the ingredients, you can get a nasty skin allergy. Even if you don't get the skin allergy, the fumes might give you a nasal allergy. Avoiding hair dye allergies sometimes reduces nasal allergies, too.
- Run a humidifier. The extra humidity in the air in the rooms where you spend the most time keeps the lining of nose moist and less likely to crack in ways that let viruses in.
- The next time you want to bring home a kitty, consider allergy free cats. Cat dander tends to linger in the air like a cloud, no matter how often you dust and vacuum. Just about the only way to prevent allergic reactions to cats is to own an allergy free cat, such as an Allerca, although you can also benefit from HEPA air filtration.
