What’s The Buzz About Organic Skin Care?
Having hard time to keep your skin healthy and youthful? It’s not easy.
On top of that, we try to find the perfect products for us that are both authentic and effective. Just because a product promises to be organic does not mean that this is so.
It is important to determine what is real so that you are getting the best products for your skin.
Why Use Organic Skin Care
Is The Best For Your Skin?
As much as 60 percent of what we put on our skin is absorbed by it. We definitely do not want dangerous chemicals being absorbed by the skin. Organic skin care does not use harsh chemicals or scents, which make the products far gentler and it is rare that they will cause skin problems. The primary reasons to reach for organic skin care products over non-organic are:
Certified organic ingredients are used to create the products
The ingredients have not been grown with the use of dangerous pesticides.
Organic products are not associated with the skin reactions that chemicals are.
This is especially important for those with sensitive skin.
Our skin absorbs what we put on it
It is much safer to absorb organic plant extracts than it is to absorb harsh synthetic chemicals and oils. Plus, many plant extracts can actually benefit the skin.
Real versus Fake Organic Skin Care
First, products that are truly organic will be certified organic. If a product claims to be organic, but does not have that certification seal, do not use it. There are varying degrees of this certification too, however, so this complicates things. An EcoCert certification means that the product only needs to have 10 percent organic ingredients.
A sergeant level certification means that a minimum of 70 percent of the ingredients are organic. A NASAA, OFC or ACO bud logo means that there is a minimum of 95 percent organic ingredients and absolutely no petrochemicals or fragrances.
A Pure and Green certification means that the product is truly organic. A third-party has verified this as well, giving the product credibility. So, Pure and Green are the only true organic skin products that you will find.
How Can Consumers Know if Organic Skin Care is 100% Real?
You need to read the logos for certification. These should not be hard to find as organic skin care providers should happily and willingly display their organic status. If you have scanned the product container and see no logo, this means that it is not truly organic.
If a product says natural, this does not mean organic. Natural products tend to not have added chemicals, but they can still include ingredients that were grown using pesticides and herbicides.
You also want to look for added colors and scents (often referred to as parfum). These are not natural and can cause adverse effects for the skin. Some people can be allergic to added scents and dyes. Truly organic products get their color and scent strictly from the ingredients within the product.

Watch Out For These
Common
Chemicals Used in Skin Care Products
We know that chemicals can be dangerous. Many non-organic products use chemicals like:
formaldehyde and
mercury.
Formaldehyde is the same chemical they use to preserve dead bodies. This chemical has been associated with cancer. In fact, it is banned for cosmetic use in many countries. Mercury, when high doses enter the body, can result in nervous system problems.
Sodium lauryl sulphate is also commonly seen. This is what is responsible for the bubbles we see in certain bath products and shampoos. It can irritate the eyes and the skin. Mineral oil is also seen and this has been associated with clogging pores and causing blackheads.
This is not to say that using regular cosmetics and skin care will automatically cause you health problems. However, the risk is there, so using these products is something that you should think about before applying them to your skin.
